Calais on a Sunday: what is actually open?
Calais is quieter on Sunday, but it is not closed. The beach, Dragon, lighthouse and several museums can still make the trip worthwhile. Shopping requires more planning because supermarkets generally open in the morning while most mall shops remain closed.

Shop or visit the market in the morning, have lunch, then spend the afternoon at the beach, Dragon or a museum. Do not leave supermarket shopping until after lunch.
Is Calais worth visiting on Sunday?
Yes, especially if you want the beach, a relaxed lunch or one attraction rather than a full shopping day. Sunday can actually suit a short stop because the city is generally quieter and parking is free across most of Calais.
It is less suitable when your main purpose is visiting fashion shops, Channel Outlet or several retail centres. For that, Saturday or a weekday is safer.
A practical Sunday itinerary
Morning: market or supermarket
Start with whichever type of shopping interests you most:
- Visit the Sunday market in the Beau-Marais district.
- Shop at Carrefour Cité Europe during its limited Sunday-morning opening.
- Use another supermarket only after confirming that branch’s hours.

Lunch: central Calais or the seafront
Drive towards Calais Nord or the beach for lunch. Restaurants set their own opening days, and some that open on Sunday may close between lunch and dinner.

Afternoon: choose one main attraction
The best choices are:
- Calais beach and seafront.
- The Dragon of Calais.
- Calais Lighthouse.
- Musée des Beaux-Arts.
- The City of Lace and Fashion.
One attraction plus the beach is usually enough for a Sunday stop before an evening crossing.
Visit the Sunday market
Calais has a Sunday-morning fresh-produce market in the Beau-Marais district, around Rue Greuze. It is more local than the shopping centres in Coquelles and offers a different view of everyday Calais.
Expect fresh produce and stalls aimed primarily at residents rather than Channel shoppers. Arrive during the morning because French food markets commonly begin packing away around lunchtime.

Sunday shopping in Calais
Carrefour at Cité Europe currently opens on Sunday morning, normally from 09:00 to 12:30. It is convenient for both ferry and LeShuttle visitors.
The surrounding Cité Europe shops generally remain closed on Sundays. Restaurants, the cinema and leisure businesses may follow separate schedules.
Do not assume that Channel Outlet is open. It sometimes announces exceptional Sunday trading, but this is not a dependable weekly arrangement.
If you reverse that order, you may reach the supermarket after it has closed.
Calais beach and seafront
The beach is the safest choice when opening hours are uncertain. It is freely accessible and has several parking areas along the seafront.
You can walk along the promenade, watch ferries entering the port, stop for food and visit the Dragon area. It works equally well for a short break or a longer afternoon with children.
In poor weather, keep the beach walk short and combine it with a museum or long lunch.
The Dragon of Calais on Sunday
The Dragon usually operates from Tuesday to Sunday, but its exact movements depend on the annual calendar. A ride takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour, including boarding and disembarking.
Book a specific departure instead of merely turning up. The departure point can vary, and the Dragon or another creature may be resting on particular dates.

Climb Calais Lighthouse
Calais Lighthouse is one of the better Sunday attractions for clear weather. The climb involves 271 steps, with views over Calais, the port and the Strait of Dover.
The lighthouse normally receives individual visitors on Sundays, although opening periods and guided visits can vary with the season and school holidays. Confirm the day’s sessions before travelling.
Sunday museums
Musée des Beaux-Arts
The Musée des Beaux-Arts is an unusually good Sunday fallback because admission is free. The collection includes work connected to Rodin’s Burghers of Calais.
The museum currently opens at weekends from 12:30 to 17:30, extending to 18:00 between April and October. Check for exceptional closures before visiting.
City of Lace and Fashion
The City of Lace and Fashion is the more substantial museum option. It explains Calais lace as both an industrial process and a fashion product.
It normally opens on Sundays, but exhibition access and hours can change. Allow more time here than at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
Second World War Museum
The Calais Second World War Museum occupies a former German naval bunker in Parc Saint-Pierre. Its seasonal schedule is less straightforward, so confirm Sunday opening before making it the centre of your plan.
What is always available?
These outdoor stops do not depend on ticket-office opening hours:
- The beach and promenade.
- Parc Saint-Pierre.
- The Burghers of Calais sculpture.
- The exterior of the Town Hall and belfry.
- Place d’Armes and Calais Nord.
- The marina and harbour views.
- The exterior of Notre-Dame Church.
This makes the Town Hall area a useful stop even when the belfry itself is unavailable.
Eating in Calais on Sunday
Calais still has restaurants open on Sunday, particularly around Calais Nord, Place d’Armes and the seafront. However, French service times are more structured than many British visitors expect.
- Plan lunch around 12:00 to 14:00.
- Do not assume food is served continuously all afternoon.
- Check whether the restaurant serves Sunday dinner as well as lunch.
- Book ahead for popular seafood restaurants.
Shopping-centre restaurants may open independently from surrounding retail shops, but check the individual venue rather than the mall’s general hours.
Public transport on Sunday
Calais has a free urban bus network, but Sunday services are more limited. Importantly, the Balad’in connection between the ferry terminal, town centre and Calais-Ville station does not normally operate on Sundays or French public holidays.
This particularly affects foot passengers. Do not book a Sunday ferry trip and assume a town-centre shuttle will be waiting. Check the ferry operator, local bus timetable and taxi availability in advance.

Where should you park?
Parking across most of Calais is free, including useful areas near the beach and centre. Good Sunday choices include:
- The seafront car parks for the beach and Dragon.
- Place du Soldat Inconnu for the Town Hall and Parc Saint-Pierre.
- Place d’Armes or the marina parking areas for Calais Nord.

If it rains
A wet Sunday still works if you confirm an indoor attraction first. The best structure is:
- Supermarket shopping during the morning.
- A long lunch in central Calais.
- Musée des Beaux-Arts or the City of Lace and Fashion.
- A short seafront drive before returning to the terminal.
Avoid planning the entire day around indoor shopping because most ordinary mall shops are closed.
If you only have two hours
Choose one of these combinations:
- Morning: Carrefour Cité Europe plus coffee.
- Fine weather: beach walk plus the Dragon area.
- Culture: Town Hall exterior plus Musée des Beaux-Arts.
- Food: lunch in Calais Nord plus a short harbour walk.

Sunday is a good day to see Calais, but a poor day to improvise a shopping trip. Make supermarket purchases before lunch, verify one main attraction and leave the remainder of the day for the seafront or centre.
The result is a calmer and more local visit than spending the entire stop inside the Coquelles retail area.
