Carrefour Cité Europe: a practical guide for UK shoppers

Carrefour at Cité Europe is one of the largest hypermarkets around Calais. It is particularly convenient for LeShuttle passengers looking for French wine, cheese, groceries and road-trip supplies. The enormous selection is useful, but the store can take much longer to navigate than a normal British supermarket.

What is Carrefour Cité Europe?

Carrefour is the anchor hypermarket inside Cité Europe. It combines a large food supermarket with departments for household goods, clothing, electronics, toys, car products and seasonal items.

For UK visitors, the food and drinks departments are normally the main attraction. The selection of French products is far broader than in most British supermarkets.

It is not a small supermarket that can always be entered, crossed and left within twenty minutes. Walking between departments and reaching the checkout can take a substantial amount of time.

What is worth buying?

French cheese

The cheese section is one of the strongest reasons to visit. You can compare familiar products with regional and less widely exported cheeses.

Look for:

• Soft cheeses such as Camembert and Brie
• Comté and other aged mountain cheeses
• Goat’s cheese in different ages and styles
• Maroilles and other cheeses from northern France
• Raclette and fondue cheese
• Pre-selected regional cheese boards

Pack strong-smelling and soft cheeses securely before placing them in the car.

Wine

Carrefour carries wine from across France, ranging from inexpensive everyday bottles to more serious regional selections.

The size of the department can be overwhelming if you do not know what you want. Choose a region, price range or food pairing before browsing.

Promotions can offer good value, but compare the final euro price with current UK prices. A large discount against a French reference price does not automatically guarantee a bargain.

Beer, cider and spirits

You will find French and Belgian beer, Normandy and Breton cider, aperitifs and spirits. Specialist alcohol warehouses may offer larger bulk promotions, but Carrefour provides a broader general shop.

The refrigerated departments contain pâté, terrines, cured meats, sausages and prepared appetisers. These are useful for a picnic, holiday rental or onward road trip.

Carrefour has an in-store bakery section with baguettes, breads, croissants and pastries. It is convenient, although an independent bakery can provide a more distinctive experience.

Look for products from northern France rather than only buying national brands available in every French supermarket.

What might not be cheaper than in Britain?

Cross-Channel shopping is no longer a guarantee of large savings across every category. Exchange rates, UK promotions and changing French prices all affect the comparison.

Pay particular attention when buying:

• Soft drinks
• Electronics
• Clothing
• Wine also sold by UK supermarkets

Carrefour is strongest for selection and access to French products, not necessarily for the lowest price on every item.

Carrefour Cité Europe or Auchan Calais?

Both are large French hypermarkets, but they suit slightly different visits.

Choose Carrefour if:

• You are travelling through LeShuttle
• You also want to visit the shops at Cité Europe
• You need restaurants and other facilities nearby
• You want a convenient all-in-one stop

Choose Auchan if:

• You prefer a standalone hypermarket
• You are approaching from another part of Calais
• You want to compare fresh food or regional ranges
• You do not need the rest of Cité Europe

Is it convenient after LeShuttle?

Yes. Carrefour is one of the easiest major stops after leaving the LeShuttle terminal because you are already in Coquelles.

It works well for food, drinks, toiletries and supplies before continuing into France. You can also have breakfast or lunch elsewhere inside Cité Europe.

Is it convenient before LeShuttle?

Carrefour is also a logical final stop before returning to Britain through the Channel Tunnel. You remain close to the terminal rather than crossing back from central Calais.

Do not shop until immediately before check-in. The store is large, checkout queues vary and finding your vehicle in a busy car park can take time.

Is it convenient from the ferry port?

Carrefour Cité Europe is reachable from the ferry port, but it is not immediately beside it. You must travel west towards Coquelles.

It is worth the drive when you want the full Cité Europe experience or a very large grocery shop. For a few essentials, Carrefour Mi-Voix may be more convenient for ferry passengers.

Before a ferry departure, remember that you must drive back towards the port after shopping.

How long should you allow?

Thirty to sixty minutes

Suitable for bread, drinks, cheese and a small number of known products. Make a list before entering.

One to two hours

A realistic amount of time for a larger grocery shop with wine, cheese, charcuterie and regional products.

Two to four hours

Enough time to combine Carrefour with the rest of Cité Europe, lunch or Channel Outlet.

Opening hours

Carrefour normally opens earlier and closes later than the smaller shops inside Cité Europe. Its hours are therefore not necessarily the same as the surrounding shopping centre.

Opening hours can change on Sundays, public holidays and exceptional dates. Check the official Carrefour Coquelles page on the day you travel.

Is Carrefour open on Sunday?

Sunday trading around Calais can change and may involve shorter morning opening. Do not assume the hypermarket keeps its normal weekday hours.

Parking and finding the hypermarket

Cité Europe has extensive free parking divided between several entrances. Save the location of your car, particularly if you enter through the shopping centre and leave through a different door.

Follow signs for Carrefour rather than parking beside the first Cité Europe entrance you see. A poorly chosen space can add a long walk when returning with a full trolley.

Keep passports, valuables and luggage out of sight. Do not leave newly purchased goods visibly unattended while visiting another shopping area.

Do you need a euro coin for the trolley?

French supermarket trolleys commonly use a coin or reusable trolley token. Carrying a €1 coin or suitable token avoids having to find change at the entrance.

The system may change, but bringing a coin remains a sensible precaution.

Checkout and payment

Payment cards are widely accepted. Keep an alternative payment method available in case your bank blocks a large foreign transaction or a card terminal fails.

Larger shops can take time to unload, scan and repack. Bring reusable bags or sturdy crates if you plan to buy bottles and heavy groceries.

Retain receipts until you have checked the goods and completed your journey.

Buying chilled and frozen food

Use insulated bags or a cool box if you are travelling far, visiting other attractions or waiting for a later crossing.

Buy chilled and frozen products near the end of your visit rather than leaving them inside a parked car while you explore Calais.

In warm weather, a car can become hot very quickly even when the temperature outside seems moderate.

Alcohol allowances when returning to Britain

Personal allowances apply when bringing alcohol from France into Great Britain. These rules are separate from the amount Carrefour allows you to purchase.

Can UK visitors claim a French VAT refund?

Non-EU residents can sometimes qualify for tax-free shopping when eligibility, purchase-value and export conditions are met.

Everyday supermarket purchases are not automatically refunded. Ask Carrefour’s customer service desk about current participation and requirements before completing a large purchase.
