Auchan Calais: is it better than Carrefour?
Auchan Calais is a large hypermarket inside the Les 2 Caps shopping centre on Avenue Roger Salengro. It offers a full French grocery shop, wine and beer, fresh-food counters and a range of surrounding stores, without the scale and visitor traffic of Cité Europe.

Our verdict: choose Auchan when the hypermarket itself is more important than visiting a major mall. Choose Carrefour at Cité Europe when you are travelling through LeShuttle and want the widest selection of surrounding shops and restaurants.
Why Auchan is worth considering
Cité Europe receives most of the attention from British visitors, but Auchan is a serious alternative. It is the main store inside the Les 2 Caps retail centre and is designed for a full weekly shop rather than only quick travel purchases.
Auchan makes particular sense when you:
- want a large French hypermarket without visiting Cité Europe;
- are mainly shopping for food and drink;
- want fresh-food counters as well as packaged groceries;
- need household, personal-care or general merchandise;
- are shopping on Sunday morning;
- prefer a large surface-level car park.
It is less suitable when you want a quick town-centre stop or have very little time before a ferry. The site is on the western side of Calais, in the wider Coquelles retail area.
What can you buy at Auchan Calais?
The official store directory lists the departments expected from a full-sized French hypermarket, including:
- fruit and vegetables;
- bakery products;
- cheese and charcuterie counters;
- butchery and fish counters;
- wine, beer and spirits;
- organic products;
- toiletries and household goods;
- books, music and video games;
- toys, gardening and automotive products.
The advantage is that drinks, French food and ordinary travel supplies can all be bought during one visit. The disadvantage is that a large hypermarket can take time to navigate, especially when you do not know where products are located.
Wine and beer at Auchan
Auchan has a dedicated wine section, alongside beer, Champagne and spirits. It is a practical choice when alcohol is part of a wider food shop.

Auchan or Carrefour Mi-Voix?
Carrefour Mi-Voix is positioned more conveniently for many ferry passengers leaving or approaching the port. Auchan offers a larger retail complex but normally requires a longer diversion towards the western side of Calais.
- Choose Mi-Voix when speed and proximity to the ferry side of Calais matter most.
- Choose Auchan when you want a more substantial shop and have enough time.

How much time should you allow?
A large hypermarket visit can easily take longer than expected. Walking from the car, finding products, queuing and loading the vehicle all need to be included.
These are estimates, not guaranteed visit times. Saturdays, holiday periods and the start of school holidays can be busier.
Before a crossing: work backwards from the required ferry or LeShuttle check-in time. Do not calculate only from the advertised departure time.
Les 2 Caps shopping centre
Auchan is the anchor store of Centre Commercial Les 2 Caps. The local tourism office currently describes the complex as containing around thirty shops and services.
This makes the site more than a standalone supermarket, but it remains considerably smaller and simpler than Cité Europe. The exact tenant list can change, so do not make a separate journey for one surrounding store without checking first.
The centre advertises a large free car park with more than 2,800 spaces. Parking close to the entrance may still be busier during peak shopping periods.

Parking, fuel and EV charging
The retail centre has a large surface car park, making it suitable for vehicles carrying luggage or larger purchases. Always lock luggage out of sight and avoid leaving valuable travel documents in the vehicle.
Fuel is available in the Auchan area. Check the payment method and operating status if you specifically need LPG or another less common fuel type.
Public charging directories currently list EV charging at the Auchan site, but charger availability, connector type and payment arrangements can change. Confirm these in a live charging app before relying on them.
Is Auchan convenient for LeShuttle?
Auchan is in the wider Coquelles area and is accessible for LeShuttle passengers, but Cité Europe is more directly associated with the terminal retail zone.
Auchan becomes the better choice when you specifically prefer this hypermarket, want to avoid the larger mall or are already approaching from the western side of Calais.

Is Auchan convenient for ferry passengers?
Ferry passengers can reach Auchan by driving across Calais towards the western retail area. It may be worthwhile for a substantial shop, but it is not the most direct supermarket for every port journey.
